Mooresville Veterans Memorial

Mooresville Schools are proud to serve as the home of the Mooresville Veterans Memorial. This Memorial is a beautiful tribute to those who have made the ultimate sacrifice. We hope you will visit the Memorial on the campus of Newby Elementary School (located at the intesection of Monroe St. and Memorial Drive) or join our local VFW Post 1111 and American Legion Post 103 as their 11a.m. ceremonies each year on Memorial Day and Veterans Day.

The Mooresville Veterans Memorial was erected on Veterans Day, 1948, to honor the twenty-nine Mooresville-area veterans who lost their lives during World War I and II. The Memorial replaced an aging community Honor Roll which honored area citizens who had served in the military. The dedication of the memorial was part of a larger project which included the creation of Memorial Field (at that time the MHS football field) and re-naming of the adjacent street to Memorial Drive. As part of a town Memorial Day bicentennial celebration in 1976, the Memorial was re-dedicated to include the names of those who lost their lives in Korea and Vietnam. On its 60th anniversary in 2008, the memorial was expanded to include Mooresville-area soldiers lost in recent years as well as many other upgrades honoring these patriots.

The Memorial also honors Sammy Davis, a Mooresville High School graduate and Congressional Medal of Honor recipient in 1967 for his heroism in Vietnam. Davis is also well-known as "The Real Forrest Gump" since his military story was the basis for many of Forrest's military experiences in the book and the movie.

Each year on Memorial Day and Veterans Day at 11:00a.m., the Mooresville American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars posts hold ceremonies at the site, remembering the fallen and honoring those who have served our country with honor.
