School Delays/Closings

Indiana weather is unpredictable and situations such as a power failure can occur at any time. The following information is designed to help families prepare for just such an event and be aware of the school's procedures to keep our children safe.

In the event school must be closed or delayed due to hazardous weather conditions or other unforeseen reason, the superintendent will communicate the decision primarily through the Skyward system.  Families will receive an automated telephone call and text message as soon as the decision has been made.

Closing or delaying school is taken very seriously as student safety, especially during the winter months, dictates the decision.  School officials use the latest weather information, consult with highway departments and emergency agencies, checking with weather experts on conditions in and forecasts for our area, and discuss conditions with neighboring school districts in making the assessment to close or delay school. Although communication will occur through Skyward, local radio (102.3fm) and Indianapolis television stations will also be notified.

Please be sure your child's Skyward profile is updated with current contact information as well as authorized emergency contacts. Login to Skyward to check this information. If you have questions or concerns, please contact your child's school office. For technology issues, please send an email with you child's name, your name, and your child's school to [email protected]

School Delay Reminders:
  1. Bus pickup and school start times will be the same amount of time as the called delay. If school is on a two-hour delay, bus pick-up and school start time will be two hours later than normal.

  2. Developmental Pre-School A.M. classes at Waverly Elementary are cancelled; however P.M. classes will be on the regular schedule.

  3. Career Center A.M. classes at Ben Davis High School are cancelled; however, P.M. classes will be on regular schedule. See MHS/Ben Davis Schedule information.

  4.  Elementary Rec&U Programs:  Open at regular times on a school delay but are closed when school is closed.

Calling school delays due to weather conditions allows for daylight so students can been seen more easily walking to school or their bus stops, for temperatures to possibly warm slightly, to allow additional time for warming buses, and possibly to allow more time for clearing roads, parking lots, and sidewalks.

School Closure/eLearning Reminders:
Should schools need to close due to weather or other issues, students will likely take part in eLearning. Visit our eLearning webpage for schedules, login information, and more. Please be aware that in the case of closure due to weather conditions, after school programs through Rec&U as well as the Boys and Girls Club will also be closed.
Early Dismissal Reminders:
Should there be an early dismissal due to weather conditions, we will announce information as quickly as possible through direct parent messaging as well as media channels. Please be aware that in the case of early dismissal, after school programs through Rec&U as well as the Boys and Girls Club will also be closed.
